Prior to the incorporation of the Spanish Community Care Association in 2006, John Martin and Maria Legaz volunteered as Directors to the Spanish Club of Sydney.

During their service, John and Maria noticed the majority of Spanish Club members were seniors. These people met at the Club to socialise; play cards and dominoes and drink coffee. They also noticed the absence of individuals from the Spanish-speaking community. It appeared that these individuals were unable to travel to the Spanish Club in Sydney, owing to their health, fragility or commitment as carers. The Spanish Community Care Association was born out of the need to reconnect with these people.

The City of Sydney assisted the SCCA to establish community services, such as home visits to Spanish-speaking seniors and people in need, by running free volunteer workshops and training programs. The SOC continues to encourage and support the development of these programs and activities.
